As another National Domestic Violence Awareness Month rolls around, victims and advocates in Dallas face special challenges this October. The continuing recession creates extra hardships for victims who may not have the resources to leave their abuser and for advocates who are trying to meet the growing demand for safe refuge and other domestic violence services with dwindling funding. Women Called Moses (WCM) hopes to utilize National Domestic Violence Awareness Month to tell some of these stories and to promote greater public awareness and education about the impact of domestic violence on our families and communities.
This year, Women Called Moses Coalition & Outreach has a fantastic dinner and program lined up starting with keynote speaker Pat Brown – nationally known criminal profiler, television commentator, author, founder and CEO of The Sexual Homicide Exchange and The Pat Brown Criminal Profiling Agency. She can be seen regularly on cable television news programs, CNN, MSNBC and is a frequent guest of the Today Show, the CBS Early Show, Larry King, Nancy Grace and America’s Most Wanted. Also, on the panel are W.C.M. Founder/Philanthropist Debra Nixon-Bowles, Janee Harell and hosted by Dawn Neufeld. Some of this year’s added sponsors include Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities and NFL memorabilia from Darrin Walls of the Atlanta Falcons. Although Mr. Walls won’t be on hand to present his donation, he did want everyone to know that “he hopes to just change someone’s life. And if I can change someone’s life or put a smile on their face for just a few hours, then my mission is a success.” Proceeds from this event will go toward the purchase of a long-term transitional housing facility near downtown Dallas.
