While their children watch a fantasy world come to life, parents may recognize something of this world in commercials for the upcoming film, “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.” Sporting fuel-efficient technology fit for the environmental tale, a “Seuss-ified” version of the new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover is currently appearing in co-branded TV commercials for ‘The Lorax,’ and a spot will also appear in theaters on the movie’s March 2 debut date.
A computer-generated Mazda CX-5 takes a ride through Dr. Seuss’ world thanks to a partnership between Mazda, Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment that aims to encourage consumers to make more environmentally and family-friendly choices. Currently available at Mazda dealerships, the 2013 CX-5 is the first to incorporate Mazda’s entire suite of fuel-efficient SKYACTIV technologies, making it fit for a world where Truffula Trees and their surrounding ecosystem must be treated delicately.
“The Mazda CX-5 may be appearing in a cartoon make-believe world in its latest ads, but the idea is to show that the new SKYACTIV technologies can have a very real impact on emissions,” said Bob McCullen, general sales manager of Grappone Mazda, a Bow, New Hampshire Mazda dealership. “Because of its new chassis, transmissions and engine, the CX-5 manages to achieve the fuel economy of a hybrid without requiring expensive hybrid technology. The Lorax isn’t the only one who can appreciate that.”
With its new SKYACTIV suite, Mazda has earned a quirky distinction as the first carmaker to receive the official “Truffula Tree Seal of Approval.” The automaker’s latest commercial suggests that the Mazda CX-5 is green enough in theory to be driven through the Truffula Valley amongst the wooly cartoon trees. And, as Mazda stresses, its compact crossover accomplishes that fuel efficiency without compromising the brand’s usual fun-to-drive performance.
To maximize fuel efficiency, Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology suite combines a lightweight chassis and rigid body design with a redesigned engine and efficient transmission systems. When mated to the manual transmission, the Mazda CX-5’s SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder engine can return up to 35 mpg on the highway. Even with that fuel efficiency, the CX-5 still delivers 155 horsepower, enough to whisk drivers away to Truffula Valley at their local theater or to Waterville Valley in the White Mountains.
As part of its partnership with ‘The Lorax’ movie, Mazda has also pledged to support the National Education Association’s Read Across America program. For every person who test drives any new Mazda through April 2, the automaker will donate $25 to Read Across America until $1 million is reached. Drivers must sign up at www.mazdatestdriveoffer.com/lorax and take the printed certificate to their Mazda dealership before the test drive. Every person who takes a test drive through the program is automatically entered to win a trip for four to Universal Orlando Resort.
“Our children are the ones that are going to benefit or suffer based on what we do with the environment and their education today, and Mazda recognizes that,” added McCullen. “Whether it’s in regards to more fuel-efficient cars or developing a kid’s imagination, Mazda is encouraging everyone to help build a brighter future.”
