Tyler, Texas (Tyler Truck Accident Attorney News) — After a string of deadly accidents occurred across the United States involving truckers’ cell phone use, safety officials have now recommended a ban on texting and talking on cell phones while behind the wheel. Tyler truck accident attorney Gregg Price, at PRW Lawyers, is supporting the ban that can help eliminate preventable accidents that have seriously injured countless victims and claimed far too many lives.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recommended a ban that would prohibit truckers and other commercial drivers from using cell phones—including handheld and hands-free devices—while behind the wheel, except in emergencies.
“Distracted driving is becoming increasingly prevalent, exacerbating the danger we encounter daily on our roadways,” said NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman in an NTSB press release. “It can be especially lethal when the distracted driver is at the wheel of a vehicle that weighs 40 tons and travels at highway speeds.”
New regulations on cell phone use by truckers are no strangers to federal regulators. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), who oversees truckers, has already put in place a ban that prohibits texting while driving. The U.S. Department of Transportation has also instated a rule that bans the use of hand-held phones by commercial truck drivers. But, some are saying that the NTSB’s recommendation will be “one of the most sweeping restrictions on mobile phone use while driving,” if it is adopted, stated the SF Chronicle.
NTSB’s safety recommendation has been sent to FMCSA and all 50 states for review and action. No word yet if or when the measure will be approved or denied.
Tyler accident lawyer, Gregg Price, says “The use of cell phones and texting while driving has increasingly resulted in many fatal accidents, especially those involving large trucks, semi-trucks, or buses. Texting and cell phone use can easily distract drivers and can be deadly without a moments notice. The complete ban on cell phones and texting while driving would protect everyone by reducing the number of accidents.”
