Around 50 percent of power will come from solar photovoltaic power supplies and the remaining percentage from wind energy and bio fuels. Maldivian government officials have waived the original concept of charging tourists upon entry into the country to pay for the new national sustainability policy.
The Worlds lowest country is embarking on a mission to become carbon neutral. One resort should receive the carbon neutral status by next year, leaving the islands to follow suit.
The Maldivian government is rapidly trying to introduce solar power in the capital Male and plans to install around 2-3 megawatts (MW) of solar power supplies, although much more will be required to fully supply 100 percent of power.
The government is already trying to construction more environmentally friendly buildings and encourage the use of electric and hybrid vehicles.
The Maldives will receive $30 million from Climate Investment Funds, which will be given by various development banks to help poorer countries launch low carbon projects. It is thought that $120 million of capital will be required to make the Maldives 100% carbon neutral by 2020.
