Led by its iconic 911 sports car and powerful Cayenne luxury SUV, Porsche saw its best-ever January sales last month. The luxury automaker sold 3,358 vehicles in January, a 32 percent increase compared to the same month last year. Accounting for nearly half of those sales was the Porsche Cayenne, which moved 1,500 units for a 51 percent jump year-over-year. Meanwhile, sales of the Porsche 911 rose by 28 percent in January, totaling 877 units.
The Porsche 911 has seen a boost in popularity following a 2012-model-year redesign that made it lighter, faster and more fuel efficient than previous generations. An all-wheel-drive version of the new seventh-generation 911, the 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4, just went on sale last month. On the other hand, the Porsche Cayenne has benefited from two new trims that launched last year, including a Cayenne Diesel that has an estimated range of 740 miles and a high-performance Cayenne GTS that outputs 420 horsepower.
“The 911 and the Cayenne have always been top sellers in our showroom, but Porsche has found ways to make them more appealing than ever before, whether it’s the 911’s successful redesign or the Cayenne’s exciting new trims,” said Larry Bedell, general manager of Porsche of Nashua, a New Hampshire Porsche dealer. “We expect sales of both models to continue to grow, with the 911 benefiting from the new option of all-wheel drive and a new range-topping Cayenne Turbo S coming this spring.”
Unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show last month, the 2014 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S features a 4.8-liter twin-turbo V8 that churns out 550 horsepower, allowing the SUV to sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. That impressive power is complemented by improved driving dynamics, thanks to Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control and the Sport Chrono package. Outside, the Cayenne Turbo S is set apart with exclusive styling, like the use of high-gloss black on the front air intakes, rearview mirror trim and standard 21-inch 911 Turbo II wheels.
While the Cayenne continues to win over new buyers after its first decade on the market, Porsche is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 911 nameplate this year with fans. The luxury automaker is expected to mark the occasion with a special-edition 911 model, but it also has plenty of other plans in the works. A vintage 1967 Porsche 911 will be attending special events across five continents, including a stop in Pebble Beach, Calif., while the Porsche Museum in Germany will showcase a special 911 exhibition from June 4 to Sept. 29.
“If you were to park the original 911 and the current model side-by-side, you’d still instantly recognize them as the same vehicle, but the advances that Porsche has made in materials and drivetrains in 50 years is incredible,” added Bedell. “This year should serve as a great reminder to 911 buyers that when they make their purchase, they are taking home a timeless sports car that will be valued for decades.”
