Acura’s MDX seven-passenger crossover is already the luxury auto brand’s best-selling vehicle, so its engineers took more of an evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, approach with its redesign for the 2014 model year. Unveiled at the New York International Auto Show in late March, the 2014 Acura MDX features a sleeker and more aerodynamic exterior, a lighter platform and a new V6 engine that combine to increase fuel efficiency and enhance performance.
Following treatment in the wind tunnel from Acura’s engineers, the new MDX is 17 percent more aerodynamic than its predecessor. Meanwhile, the SUV’s new body is composed of more than 55 percent advanced lightweight materials, including high-strength steel, magnesium and aluminum, making it both stronger and nimbler than the previous generation. Those changes, along with a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 powerplant, result in improved acceleration and handling, as well as the ability to return up to 28 mpg on the highway in a new, lower-priced front-wheel-drive model.
“Acura has taken its most popular vehicle and made it better across the board, whether you’re looking at the MDX’s style, space, performance, fuel efficiency or technology,” said Joel Avery, general manager of Acura of Peabody, an Acura dealership in Massachusetts. “The 2014 Acura MDX beat out the current model on Germany’s famed Nurburgring by eight seconds, yet it now returns four more miles per gallon on the highway than the Buick Enclave and Infiniti JX35. That means MDX buyers don’t need to compromise responsiveness for fuel savings.”
Inside the 2014 MDX, drivers will find comfort and convenience for the entire family. Thanks to a wheelbase that is 2.75 inches longer than the outgoing model, interior space has not only increased, but the second- and third-row areas have also been redesigned for ease-of-use. The second-row seats can now fold and slide forward with a One-Touch Walk-In button, making it easier for children to enter and exit the third row. Step-in height in the back has been lowered by two inches and the entryway is now three inches wider for easier access to the rear row.
Outside, the new MDX receives Jewel Eye LED headlights that are similar to those found on the all-new Acura RLX flagship sedan, and the SUV dons many of the subtler styling cues of its smaller Acura RDX sibling. Boosted by its own redesign for the 2013 model year, the Acura RDX has earned 11 straight monthly sales records. In March, sales of the compact SUV rose by an impressive 285 percent compared to the same month last year, totaling 3,875 units.
