Recent recommendations by the National Transportation Safety Board for states in an effort to reduce drunken driving have garnered widespread media attention. The NTSB’s recommendation of lowering the blood-alcohol content level for driving from .08 to .05 could potentially be a live saving change.
Currently every state in the country has a BAC limit for drivers of .08. Those at or above that limit are deemed legally drunk and may be arrested and prosecuted for drunk driving. Thousands of people are stated to die each year and more than 150,000 sustain injuries from alcohol-related accidents. The number of fatalities has decreased since the .08 legal limit was imposed; however, there remains to be seen a major issue with many people choosing to get behind the wheel after consuming too much alcohol.
Although some have criticized lowering the limit of what constitutes drunk driving, the risks of having an accident are stated to significantly decrease at a lower level. As noted in an NBC News report, at the .08 level, that risk is 100 percent increased. At .05 the risk is increased by 39 percent. That’s a major difference, and according to the NTSB, the change could culminate in 1,000 lives saved annually. Whether the recommendation will be accepted and endorsed will depend on states and the Department of Transportation.
