A recent news story highlighted the disturbing fact that close to one out of every six drivers in Dallas County is uninsured. This makes our county’s roadways among the riskiest in Texas. The Texas Department of Insurance reports that Dallas County has about 290,000 uninsured motorists, up slightly from a year ago. Uninsured drivers remain a problem across the state; more than 2.5 million Texans lack insurance coverage. That’s over 14% of all drivers!
People find ways to abuse the system. For example, many drivers buy an insurance policy for one month and then cancel it after obtaining a vehicle inspection and vehicle registration. Recent legislative efforts attempted to close that loophole, but those efforts failed.
Despite these statistics, Texas has made progress. Much of that success may be due to a program called TexasSure. This program is funded with an annual $1 fee that all Texans pay when renewing their vehicle registration. Cities also work to reduce the number of uninsured drivers on the road. For example, Dallas requires the towing of uninsured vehicles stopped by police or involved in accidents.
Many motorists opt to carry uninsured motorist coverage to protect themselves if they are involved in a wreck with an uninsured driver. In fact, Texas drivers now pay an estimated $1 billion a year to protect themselves from drivers who have no coverage.
