The Texas Department of Transportation has begun an innovative program to curb game-day drinking and driving in the state. TxDOT is traveling to college and pro football games across the state to remind football fans to make plans to get home safely.
In addition to public service announcements, TxDOT is using its new “Fan Van” to convey its message. The Fan Van is a football-shaped vehicle that is designed to educate Texas football fans about the consequences of drinking and driving. In addition to its educational focus, the Fan Van offers fans the chance to win a donated “Man Cave” (a prize that includes a large flat-screen TV, home theatre system, massage chair, and poker table). To be eligible to win, football fans must pledge to not drink and drive this football season.
Alcohol-related crashes in Texas were a huge problem last football season. More than 1,600 crashes occurred when a Texas college or professional football team was playing. And, DUI-alcohol traffic fatalities increased 27 percent on days when a Texas college or professional team was playing. TxDOT urges people who have been drinking to take a taxi, use public transportation, or designate a sober driver. TxDOT’s mobile-friendly www.SoberRides.org provides several options for getting home safely. Users may enter a current location and an end destination to find a safe way home.
