Two years ago, Detroit’s Big Three automakers all left the midsize-truck segment as their full-size pickup models became more fuel efficient and buyers were increasingly turning to crossovers when seeking a smaller-yet-versatile vehicle. After going back to the drawing board, General Motors Co. believes it has a modern answer to the current midsize pickup trucks from Japanese automakers, revealing an all-new 2015 GMC Canyon at the Detroit Auto Show this month.
Expected to be the most powerful and fuel-efficient truck in its class, the 2015 GMC Canyon will come standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine estimated to produce 193 horsepower, while buyers will be able to upgrade to a 3.6-liter V6 predicted to churn out 302 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. The new GMC Canyon will also be available with a range of intuitive technologies when it goes on sale in the third quarter of this year, including OnStar 4G LTE connectivity with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot and preventative safety features like lane-departure warning, forward collision alert and a standard rear-view camera.
“GM designed its new Canyon to attract not only buyers from the full-size-truck segment who want a more flexible daily ride or more in-car technologies for less money but also current crossover owners who are looking for legit capability,” said Robert Lefrancois, general sales manager of Mastria Buick GMC Cadillac, a Massachusetts GMC dealer. “That approach puts the GMC Canyon in a more progressive position than the current segment sales leader, the Toyota Tacoma, which hasn’t received a full redesign in several years.”
Despite its smaller stature, the 2015 GMC Canyon conveys an aggressive demeanor by emulating the front end of the redesigned 2014 GMC Sierra full-size pickup, sporting large projector-beam headlamps, standard C-shaped LED daytime running lights and horizontal chrome bars on its grille. GM hopes the new Canyon can also match the recent sales performance of the Sierra, which moved 184,389 units in the United States in 2013, a 17 percent increase compared to the year prior.
