The untitled documentary series is based off the book “Before I Forget” written by Tech Sgt Robert Davis USAF Ret and optioned by Desert Wind Films in 2012.
The filmmakers have spent the past year and half with Davis, walking through the pages of Davis’ War Journal that was kept securely in his jacket through 23 bombing missions over Nazi occupied Europe. During a bomb run over Politz on May 29th, 1944, Davis and crew were forced to abandon their B-24 Liberator after a german fighter unloaded a barrage of 20mm exploding shells, clipping a gas line and starting a fire.
“That was my first parachute jump, my only parachute jump, and a successful jump I might add”, said Davis.
Davis continued to chronicle the subsequent events throughout his imprisonment at Stalag Luft IV, until eventually being liberated in May 45′ after a grueling 500 mile “Allied Nazi Death March” towards Berlin, that nearly claimed his life.
The project, being helmed by filmmakers Josh Mills and TJ Amato of Desert Wind Films is scheduled for the festival circuit this Summer.
“We’ve spent literally months combing through every page with Bob, reliving his time in the service during the war. ” said Mills.
“We have a very rare and unique opportunity. Bob is the last surviving member of his crew, and his memory is impeccable. Not too mention because of the journal, we literally have a play-by-play account of what he experienced. We want to honor these men with not only historic accuracy, but we’re working hard with Mr. Davis on “character development”, to capture the personalities of the young bomb crew, so the audience can truly relate”, said Mills.
On a skeleton budget, Executive Producer Steven Camp has been able to use internal funding to continue moving the project forward.
“We anticipate that once the public has caught wind of this story, I’ll be able to seek equity partners to get us across the finish line. This project doesn’t stop with a docu-series…the guys are in full development for a dramatic mini series” said Camp.
Davis was stationed at Wendling AirBase, East Anglia England, serving with the 14th Wing of the 8th Air Force, 392nd Heavy Bomb Group. He resides today with his wife in Costa Mesa, California.
