The stars were aligned this past weekend, as Actor/Director Big Spence stepped into a packed theater where family, friends and fans gathered for the world premiere of Set Me Free at the Oakland International Film Festival. Having been in the acting/producing end of entertainment for quite some time now, Big Spence decided to write and direct this film. Based on one man’s life story Big Spence puts his heart and his mind into this film; a film that as he puts it, ‘edutains'(educates and entertains) people.
Set Me Free gives you an in depth look into different areas of an Urban male’s life, which often has them facing struggles, challenges, dysfunction and questioning faith. The film is definitely packed with moral messages. “I like to put messages in all of my films”, Spence told the audience, “It’s important to me to address issues that sometimes go unresolved. People often times settle for what they are dealt in life, failing to think beyond their zone of comfort and find a solution to improve their circumstances”. Big Spence put together a carefully selected cast which included; Skipper Elekwachi (Licks), Alphonso Thompson (Townbiz), Anquenitta Williams (Story of Eva), Alan ‘A.Wal’ Walker (City At War), Jonez Cain (Basketball 3:16) Steven Johnson (Fruitval Station) but he was a little more excited than usual as he had the pleasure of working with his real life daughter, ‘Mariah J. Spencer’ on this project. Mariah played the part of Kali, his on screen daughter.
As Spencer stepped out of his limo onto the red carpet he was met by media and a fully packed theater. People traveled from various places to be a part of Big Spence’s world premiere film, “Set Me Free” and to support his directorial debut. Among those in attendance were many already established directors and producers such as M. Shawn Cunningham (The Shop), Samm Styles (Black August), Robert Parham (Bullets, Blades and Blood), Eduardo Castrillo (Last Wolf of Ezo), Lamont A. Coleman (In Da Cut) and more.
Big Spence is the CEO of “Touch The Heart Productions”. Look for more of Big Spence and T.T.H Productions as he is preparing to release another project he wrote, The American Dream, as well as other projects slated for production in 2014-2015.
