Plano, Texas (WiredPRNews.com) — Best Buy Co. is going to start selling iPhones from beginning September 7 through which it will become the first chain in the U.S. to do this outside of AT&T and Apple own stores.
Best Buy made this announcement on Wednesday, expanding the Apple iPhone’s availability to 16 small mobile stores and 970 full-size Best Buy stores. It is also a victory of the chain that is upgrading its departments of cell phones. Best Buy Mobile’s president, Shawn Score, said that they had to do a lot of hard work to reach a position where AT&T and Apple will feel satisfied about their company carrying their products and they had been working on this for the past 18 months.
Minneapolis based Best Buy has also been reselling iPod Media players and Mac computers from Apple. Natalie Kerris, the spokesperson for Apple, said that the venerable relationship of the companies is the main reason why the chain is now able to distribute iPhones.
Best Buy made an announcement last week that they completed a 2-year conversion of their stores in order to include the upgraded mobile phone departments under the Best Buy Mobile brands. They have also upgraded their computer systems to handle cell phone activations and have spent approximately 250,000 hours to train their employees. This is the company’s joint venture with CarPhone Warehouse Group PLC which sells iPhones in Britain and has been the largest mobile phone retailer in Europe.
European independent chains such as CarPhone have a strong presence while the U.S. market has been dominated by stores of the carriers. AT&T sells iPhones in over 2,000 stores and Apple in 189 stores. RadioShack Corp., another electronics giant, sells phones from AT&T but not the iPhone. Michael Coe, the spokesman for AT&T, said that he cannot speculate whether the iPhones will be sold at the third party retail stores or not.
