Wired PR News.com – As reported by AFP, approximately 1.6 million displaced people are trapped in the war torn Democratic Republic of Congo. Representatives of the United Nations and other organizations have emphasized the need for urgency in assisting those said to be without shelter, water, food, or a means of taking care of their basic needs.
Diplomats are concerned for the safety of those who are held captive by rebels, or in territories that cannot be easily accessed. Many humanitarian organizations once set in place to assist with matters affecting displaced individuals have been forced into temporary suspension.
Rebels in some areas have assured the safety of residents, however, many have fled their homes to surrounding camps and other areas for refuge. After fighting broke out between rebels and government soldiers in the past week, many became displaced after being told to leave the camps and return to their homes.
Fear and panic remain common among those at risk, and officials are searching for solutions to help those affected by the conflicts.
