Top ranked news channel gets name change at height of viewership.
Wired PR News.com — CNN Headline News will soon be known by another name after experiencing one of its best years for viewer ratings. As reported by Reuters, the channel will change its name to HLN and join the ranks of the likes of stations such as TBS and CNN, with its new three letter mark.
As further noted in the Reuters report, the channel is also changing its logo and slogan to “News and Views.” The changes are said to be an acknowledgement of the channel’s evolution from providing primarily top of the hour headline news to delivering programs in a format that is comparable to channels with a bigger primetime programming emphasis like MSNBC and Fox News Channel. The channel has been on air for 26 years.
Executive Vice President for CNN Worldwide, Ken Jautz, has stated that HLN’s mission is to distinguish itself from CNN during primetime programming. It is also making several changes to its weekend schedule. In regards to the changes, which reflect the channel’s growth, Jautz is quoted as remarking “It’s appropriate for the times.”
