NY recovers more than $500 million in Medicaid payments provided on the basis of fraud.
Wired PR News.com – The state of New York has received a substantial sum in recovered monies that had been defrauded from Medicaid payments, which were supposed to be made for health care on behalf of poor, elderly, and disabled individuals in need of assistance. As reported by Reuters, NY has been able to recoup $551 million, which is stated to be equivalent to half the total sum won back by the federal government that had been distributed due to fraud and Medicaid abuse.
As quoted of the state’s governor, David Paterson, in the Reuters report, “New York is leading the way in monitoring and identifying Medicaid fraud, waste and abuse — all the while maintaining the integrity of the program for those who truly need services.”
Weeding out this kind of abuse of the system has been an ongoing initiative of the federal government, which obliges states to track acts of wrongdoing in Medicaid cases. The combined amount reportedly recovered last year for all 50 states was $305 million.
