Study links risks for heart problems to certain antipsychotic drugs.
Wired PR News – A new study has found there to be a link between taking antipsychotic drugs and an increased risk for heart complications. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the study states that newer medications of this type may even double these kinds of risks.
The rate of death found to occur from taking antipsychotic medications was approximately one in one thousand patients. Wayne Ray, an author of the study is quoted by the AP to state, “To me, three per thousand is frequent enough (that) I would take it into account for a family member or friend.” He is further noted to advise patients to speak to their physicians about the medications they are taking and possible extra measures that may be taken to reduce related heart risks.
The study, which was funded by the federal government, was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
