A toddler whose parents beat her to death reportedly told them “I love you” to try and stop them.
Wired PR News.com – A two year-old girl who was killed by her mother and stepfather reportedly reached out while being attacked in an attempt to stop them from beating her to death. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), prosecutors stated on Tuesday that Riley Ann Sawyers made a desperate plea to her mother, Kimberly Trenor, by reaching out and stating “I love you” while being brutally beaten. The child was killed in 2007 and found in a plastic container in Galveston Bay.
Assistant District Attorney, Kayla Allen, stated to jurors during Tuesday’s trial that Trenor and husband Royce Ziegler II, beat Sawyers mercifully, causing skull fractures which were identified as the cause of her death. As noted by the AP, the toddler’s remains were left unidentified for weeks until her paternal grandmother reported her belief that the girl portrayed on a police artist’s sketch was her grandchild.
Sawyers’ mother faces a sentence of up to life without parole if convicted of capital murder. Ziegler has also been charged with murder, and will have a separate trial.
