Officials seized a man on the German boarder who was attempting to smuggle insects across.
Wired PR News – A man who was attempting to smuggle spiders and cockroaches across a German boarder was caught and subsequently charged with tax fraud as well as breaking nature protection laws for his actions. As reported by AFP, the Swiss driver was found to have in his possession 164 spiders and 45 boxes of cockroaches, after his car was inspected by German customs officials.
Markus Ueckert, a spokesman for the Loerrach, Germany customs office, is quoted as stating of the discovery, “Of course, the officers didn’t open anything. They knew immediately what was going on.”
As noted in the AFP report, the man had planned to sell the spiders at a German fair. Many of the spiders, which were identified as trap-door spiders, were said to be as large as a fist. The cockroaches were going to be used as food for the specimens while on the road trip.
