Members of the district’s board of trustees have taken issue with the proposal to name an area campus after a local attorney.
Wired PR News – Some members of the DISD board of trustees are opposing the naming of a Pleasant Grove campus after a local attorney who made controversial remarks about President Barack Obama during his candidacy. As reported by the Dallas Morning News, the trustees have taken issue with naming an elementary school after Dallas lawyer Adelfa Callejo due to past statements in a past television interview regarding Obama and race.
Callejo is quoted in the report as having stated, “Obama simply has a problem that he happens to be black.” In regards to the Hispanic community, Callejo is further quoted as stating, “What I hear is that they do not trust that Obama will do something for Hispanics.”
Some suggest that Callejo’s remarks were taken out of context, and cite a number of projects the attorney has worked on for the benefit of all minorities in the Dallas community in her defense.
As noted in the report, the board is expected to consider the name proposal during the latter part of the month.
