The FDA has stated that the cigarette alternatives contain ingredients that cause cancer.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has stated that electronic cigarettes may not be as safe as manufacturers claim. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), testing by the FDA found the products, which are marketed as an alternative to smoking, to contain ingredients known to cause cancer, including one used in antifreeze.
Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, Deputy Commissioner with the FDA is quoted by the AP as stating, “Little is known about these products, including how much nicotine is there and what other chemicals may be there.”
Many are reportedly calling for the products to be removed from the market until it can be proven that they are safe for consumers and regulations for them are put into place. Dr. Diana Zuckerman of the Research Center for Women and Families is quoted in the report as stating, “Any companies selling these products in shopping malls or online should be immediately shut down by the FDA because they are selling an unregulated product.”
