The pop star was booed for statements made in defense of Gypsies at a recent concert.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News – Pop star Madonna was recently booed at a concert in Bucharest, Romania after expressing her views on the treatment of Roma or Gypsies. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the entertainer’s remarks condemning discrimination against Gypsies were met with boos from members of a crowd of 60,000 concertgoers in the country.
Radu Motoc with the Soros Foundation Romania is quoted by the AP as stating of the long standing prejudice against Roma, “There is generally widespread resentment against Gypsies in Eastern Europe. They have historically been the underdog.”
Madonna’s publicist Liz Rosenberg is quoted as stating of the pop star’s remarks, “Madonna has been touring with a phenomenal troupe of Roma musicians who made her aware of the discrimination toward them in several countries so she felt compelled to make a brief statement… She will not be issuing a further statement.”
