An estimated 70,000 deaths are attributed to unsafe abortions each year.
New York (WiredPRNews.com) – Unsafe abortions remain a growing concern despite a decrease in the total number of abortions performed across the globe. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), a worldwide survey compiled by the Guttmacher Institute in New York showed approximately 70,000 women die each year as a result of unsafe abortions, with over half of these deaths occurring in sub-Saharan Africa.
Sharon Camp, president of the institute is quoted in the report as stating of the issue, “In almost all developed countries, abortion is safe and legal… But in much of the developing world, abortion remains highly restricted, and unsafe abortion is common and continues to damage women’s health and threaten their survival.”
Many propose that lifting abortion restrictions in developing countries may be a solution for helping to combat the problem.
