Arlington police use a new website to auction off confiscated items.
Arlington, Texas (WiredPRNews.com) – Police in Arlington are trying a new means of unloading stolen property that has been taken by authorities from criminals. As reported by CBS 11 News, PropertyRoom.com is a new resource for police departments who need to rid their facilities of confiscated items.
Former New York area police officer Tom Lane, who created the website, is quoted in the report as stating of the issue with property room clutter, “There’s about $10 billion worth of product in police property rooms… I’d have to come in on a weekend, and clean out the property room and clean out every item and every case.”
Lane is further quoted as stating of the opportunity the online auction resource presents for consumers, “A customer can sit in their living room in Montana and bid on something that came from the New York City Police Department…The consumer gets a great deal, and this is a product the consumer never had access to before.”
As noted by CBS 11, the money from the sale of the items is put into the police department’s general fund. Bidding is free on the site, but registration is required for users.
