Denver, Colorado (WiredPRNews.com) – The mother of a young child believed to have floated away in a large balloon has admitted to authorities that the incident was part of a hoax. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Mayumi Heene told authorities that she and her husband were aware that their six-year-old son was not in the runaway helium balloon as many frantically searched for the child.
Officials are quoted by the AP as stating in an affidavit, “Mayumi described that she and Richard Heene devised this hoax approximately two weeks earlier…. She and Richard had instructed their three children to lie to authorities as well as the media regarding this hoax.”
Authorities are reportedly still investigating the case.
