Vancouver (WiredPRNews.com) – The death of a 21 year-old Olympic luger was confirmed Friday after a sled accident. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Nodar Kumaritashvili of the country of Georgia died after crashing into a steel pole when he lost control of his sled.
IOC president Jacques Rogge is quoted by the AP as stating of the tragedy, “Here you have a young athlete that lost his life in pursuing his passion… He had a dream to participate in the Olympic Games. He trained hard and he had this fatal accident. I have no words to say what we feel.”
As noted in the report, Kumaritashvili’s death occurred hours prior to the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games. Rogge is further quoted as stating the tragedy, “clearly casts a shadow over these games.”
