An effort has gotten under way to reinstate corporal punishment in Dallas schools.
Dallas, Texas (WiredPRNews.com) – A Dallas ISD tutor has reportedly begun a movement to reinstate corporal punishment in the district’s schools. As reported by WFAA News, Gilbert Leal created the site BringBackLicks.com to garner support in persuading the school board to consider restoring the approach for disciplining students.
Leal is quoted in the report as stating of the issue, “Right now, teachers can easily be 70 percent teaching and 30 percent dealing with disruption… We have students who don’t take teachers seriously. They’re sent on referrals to the office and sent back. It’s like a joke to them.”
Leal is further quoted as stating of the controversial policy, “It’s the psychology of it… The threat of licks. That’s what I think is so effective.” DISD reportedly banned the practice five years ago.
