Ottawa, ON – Dr. Pamela Li, an Ottawa dentist and Invisalign provider braces and general dental care, has started a new protocol recommended by the Canadian Dental Association (CDA). The Association advises dentists to see babies by age one rather than waiting until age two or three for their first dental visit. Because cavities are still common in early childhood, Dr. Li employs the CAMBRA risk assessment method to screen each child.
“At CHEO, our children’s hospital, the wait for a dental appointment in an O.R. is more than a year,” says Dr. Li, an Ottawa veneers provider. “However, dental decay is still very common among children despite water fluoridation.”
Dr. Li spends much of this first appointment in teaching the parents. “Early decay looks like white or brown patches,” says Dr. Li, an Ottawa dental implants provider. “I show the parent any plaque and give an explanation about carefully brushing the teeth. I describe the pros and cons of fluoride.”
The bacteria responsible for dental decay, strep. mutans, isn’t inherent in the human body. It must be acquired. Parents shouldn’t share utensils or cups so an infant won’t get strep. mutans. If a child does not acquire strep. mutans, then, theoretically, he or she will never experience decay.
“We make the appointment fun for children,” says Dr. Li, an Ottawa general dentist. “They get to ride in the dental chair – and we give them a toothbrush and a toy. We also provide material for the parents about caring for children’s teeth.”
