New York – New research findings show a significant number of cancer survivors are parents to young children. As reported by Reuters, the study found that over 1.5 million cancer survivors in the country have children under the age of 18 that live with them.
Dr. Paula Rauch, founder of Parenting At a Challenging Time, or PACT, at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, who is unrelated to the study, is quoted in the report as stating of the findings, “I think people have vastly underestimated the number of children who are affected by a parent’s cancer… It has been easier to measure the number of people who die from cancer, and often people still imagine that most cancer deaths and cancer survivors are elderly and don’t have dependent children.”
More information about the study may be found in the recent online publication of the Cancer journal.
