New York – Research shows that the rates of older men who take drugs for erectile dysfunction contracting sexually transmitted diseases is growing. As reported by Reuters, the numbers suggest that older men who take medications such as Viagra have a significantly higher rate of STDs than those who do not.
Study leader Dr. Anupam B. Jena of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, is quoted in the report as stating of the research findings, “Younger adults have far more STDs than older adults, but the rates are growing at far higher rates in older adults.”
Jena is further quoted as stating of the issue with safe sex practices for older adults, “We are typically unaccustomed to practice safe sex over the age of 50, because the risk of pregnancy is eliminated.” Doctors are encouraged to discuss safe sex practices with patients who are prescribed erectile dysfunction medications.
More information about the study may be available in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
