New York, NY (New York City Injury Lawyer News)—Police ticketed an unlicensed driver after a horrific traffic crash left a teenage bicyclist with traumatic brain injuries Tuesday, August 24, 2010. The violent collision occurred at the intersection of East 188th Street and Webster Avenue in the Bronx neighborhood of Fordham. A New York Daily News report stated the severely injured cyclist was placed on life support after the Bronx accident. The unfortunate wreck comes approximately one week after the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) released a landmark study concerning the dangers of navigating New York City by foot. In spite of the report, cyclists traveling through the busy city face many of the same perils as pedestrians.
Reports indicated 18-year-old Alprentice (A.J.) Gray Jr. was riding his bike down a hill on E. 188th Street. Investigators suspect Gray then used his hand to signal that he was turning onto Webster Ave. Sadly, the cyclist rode into the path of a Volkswagen Jetta, which had been traveling southbound on Webster at the time. The car slammed into Gray, leaving the vehicle’s windshield shattered and sending Gray, along with his bicycle, soaring. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel subsequently rushed Gray to St. Barnabas Hospital, where his family members discovered he was in a coma.
Maria Cipolla, Gray’s 18-year-old girlfriend, allegedly stated Gray was supposed to spend time with her that night. Gray was likely on his way to her house when the devastating collision occurred. The unidentified motorist behind the wheel of the Jetta involved was reportedly issued a citation for “driving without a license and failing to provide a child safety seat for one of two children in the back of the car.” However, Gray’s mother, 37-year-old Shaneeka DeWitt, was livid over the fact that the driver was not arrested after the wreck. “That was my firstborn. You think you get away with a summons? It’s not happening,” she fumed at the driver.
