New York – Parental alienation a mental health syndrome? As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the American Psychiatric Association is currently considering whether to include the phenomenon in revisions to its listing of mental disorders.
The psychiatric association is updating its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, as experts debate the possible inclusion of parental alienation, which some suggest should not be deemed a syndrome, while others say there is plausible evidence to support that it is.
Dr. Darrel Regier, vice chair of the task force drafting the manual, is quoted by the AP as stating of the debate, “We’ve gotten an enormous amount of mail — more than any other issue… The passions on both sides of this are exceptional.”
