New York – The governor of New York and mayor of New York City have proposed the banning of sugary drinks with food stamp purchases. As reported by Reuters, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New York Governor David Paterson are making the request of the U.S. government as part of their campaign against obesity.
Bloomberg is quoted by the AP as stating of the issue at a news conference, “This is so simple. It’s not like a disease like cancer (that) we don’t know how to cure. This we know how to cure. Stop eating extra calories… There’s nothing wrong with an occasional one. But the kids are drinking an enormous amount of full-sugar beverages and they would switch to diet beverages. So next time one of the companies calls, I’m sorry. Our children’s lives are more important than anything else.”
A reported 42 million Americans receive federal food stamp support.
