Lancaster, PA – (WiredPRNews.com) Regulators at the Pennsylvania department of insurance and transportation have issued an advisory encouraging families to assess and discuss the driving abilities of older drivers. The public announcement comes at a time when crash rates among older drivers are reportedly rising in the state and during National Older Driver Safety Awareness Week.
Deterioration in eyesight and reaction time affects older people’s ability to drive safely just as younger drivers are affected by their impulsivity and lack of experience. The only age group with a higher per-mile-driven fatal crash rate that’s worse than that of drivers age 65 to 74 is drivers under the age of 25.
With statistics like those indicating a higher-than-average risk, it might be difficult for drivers age 65 and older to find affordable Pennsylvania auto insurance policies.
This issue is not exclusive to Pennsylvania, and it is not likely to disappear any time soon. According to the United States Census Bureau, the 65-and-older population is expected to grow by nearly 14.6 million people between 2010 and 2020. Data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety show, though, that the national numbers indicate little growth in the number of crashes involving older motorists.
One option for aging drivers is to enroll in driver safety courses that are often provided free of charge. In addition to stoking safety awareness, it could result in a premium discount. Another emerging tactic in helping older drivers is computer-based brain training software. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society indicated that using such software could significantly bolster awareness and reaction time, although more research into the field is required.
Whichever route the aging driver ends up choosing, the departments stress the importance of initiating discussion.
