While it may not be as well known as the Academy Awards, when it comes to industrial design the GOOD DESIGN Awards might as well be the Oscars. As one of only three floor manufacturers recognized, Armstrong Commercial Flooring recently took home a 2011 GOOD DESIGN award for its updated Marmorette linoleum flooring line, currently available at local Armstrong flooring dealers.
While the Oscars recognize brilliance in film, the GOOD DESIGN Awards recognize new product designs that display originality and deliver beyond consumer expectations. Thousands of leading manufacturers from more than 50 nations were considered for the 2011 awards, and they could enter into a wide variety of categories that ranged from electronic devices to automobiles.
“Almost any kind of product can be considered for a GOOD DESIGN Award, but to win it really needs to exceed expectations in its industry,” said Barry Greenberg, sales manager at Greater Boston carpet dealer A.J. Rose Carpets & Flooring. “Armstrong has built its reputation on reliable, manageable and sustainable flooring. Their Marmorette line carries on the company’s tradition of offering both sustainability and style.”
Armstrong’s Marmorette linoleum is considered a lower-emitting material and thus a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional linoleum. It releases a lower level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than other flooring, resulting in a smaller amount of airborne chemicals and pollutants. Thirty-six percent of Armstrong’s linoleum is made from rapidly renewable materials like cork and wood flour, and between 10 and 20 percent of the materials already come from recycled content.
The Marmorette linoleum line also includes Armstrong’s new Continuum color and design system, which opens up 67 tonal step options for quick and easy color specifications. Continuum debuted in the Marmorette and Granette lines in 2009 with the goal of better uniting hue, value and chroma for customers.
Recent improvements like Continuum were no doubt a factor in another major accolade recently earned by Armstrong. Last fall, the company was voted the Favorite Resilient & Hard Surface Manufacturer in all five categories of Floor Focus magazine’s 2011 Top 250 Design Survey. In the latest annual survey, Armstrong was the most admired among top designers in service, quality, design, performance and value for its hard surface flooring, which includes vinyl, laminate and hardwood in addition to linoleum.
“You know you have a quality product when a broad selection of design industry professionals votes you the best in every available category,” added Greenberg. “It’s partially because Armstrong does every kind of floor well, from hardwood to linoleum, but they also listen closely to what their customers want.”
