Tyler, Texas (Tyler Personal Injury Lawyer) — Eighteen students were taken to the hospital after a Tyler ISD school bus was involved in a collision with another vehicle Monday evening, October 3, 2011. The school bus accident occurred at the intersection of County Roads 35 and 37 around 7 p.m., reports the Tyler personal injury lawyer Gregg Price of PRW Lawyers.
According to reports provided by KYTX CBS 19, the Tyler ISD school bus was transporting 26 students who were part of an after-school program between Dogan Middle School and The University of Texas at Tyler when the car accident occurred.
The driver of a late-model station wagon, Anthony Thomas, 42, of Dallas, was reportedly driving in the middle of the westbound lanes of County Road 37 when he reached the top of a hill, and slammed into the school bus at a high-rate of speed. Police believe Thomas was speeding at the time of the crash.
The impact of the crash crushed the driver’s side of the station wagon, revealed Price, a Tyler car accident lawyer.
Responding emergency crews rushed seven students to the East Texas Medical Center, while 11 others were transported to Trinity Mother Francis for medical treatment. Two students reportedly had to be extricated from the school bus and were placed on stretchers, before being rushed to hospitals.
According to a Tyler ISD spokesperson, the students sustained minor injuries, which included whiplash and ankle injuries. They were taken to the hospital as a precaution and reportedly were treated and released Monday night.
Thomas was arrested at the scene and is charged with a misdemeanor for driving with a suspended license, reports the East Texas auto accident attorney.
Investigations into the school bus accident are underway.
“Although investigations are still going, this serious traffic accident was completely preventable. Had Thomas been traveling in his lane of traffic as he crested the hill, instead of the center of the roadway, the school bus would never have collided with his vehicle. Eighteen people were injured and needed medical attention as a result of his actions, as well leaving the school bus with significant damage,” explains the Tyler injury lawyer, Gregg Price.
