In June last year, the Toyota Camry came in fourth place in U.S. car sales amid production shortages from the Japan earthquake, putting its long-held sales title into jeopardy. Fast forward one year later, however, and production is back at full steam, a redesigned 2012 Camry is in showrooms and the Toyota model is the clear favorite to be America’s best-selling car for the 11th year in a row.
The Toyota Camry was the top-selling passenger car in June, selling 32,107 units last month. Year-to-date, the Camry has sold 213,903 units, rising 45 percent compared to the same period last year. Toyota’s midsize sedan has outsold its next-best-selling competitor, the Honda Civic, by more than 50,000 units in the first half of 2012. That is a stark difference compared to the same period last year, when the Camry held a much narrower lead of roughly 15,000 units over the Nissan Altima.
“The new 2012 Camry received improvements across the board, whether you’re looking at fuel economy, rear legroom or in-car technology, and buyers are responding strongly,” said Wade Sterry, general manager of Russel Toyota, a Baltimore, Maryland Toyota dealer. “Baltimore drivers have always enjoyed the dependability and durability of the Camry, and with the latest generation’s new features we have no doubt that the Toyota Camry will again prove to be America’s favorite car this year.”
In addition to being the country’s most popular car, the Camry was also recently determined by Cars.com to be the most American-made car on the market. Editors at the auto-research site compiled their 2012 American-Made Index by evaluating cars that are built in the United States, purchased in large numbers by U.S. consumers and feature a high percentage of domestic parts.
Built in Georgetown, Ky. and Lafayette, Ind., the Camry has now been listed at number one on the Cars.com American-Made Index for four years in a row. The sedan is once again joined by the Toyota Sienna minivan and the Toyota Tundra pickup truck, which both jumped up two places on the top 10 list from last year. With three of its models dubbed as some of the most American-made by Cars.com, Toyota has the most vehicles on this year’s index.
Led by the Camry, Toyota’s overall U.S. sales were up more than 57 percent in June compared to the same month last year, totaling 157,773 units. Year-to-date, sales of Toyota vehicles have increased more than 29 percent year-over-year, with 937,964 units sold through June.
