Applications for load cells, a type of transducer, are being found in increasingly novel ways in more and more industries. From agriculture, to mining to scientific research, the devices are being used in a variety of fresh and exciting ways. Each new application for a cell will be highly specialised and industry specific, so finding a specialist manufacturer of transducers is becoming ever more important.
Transducers convert energy from one source to another. For instance, this might be a loudspeaker which converts electrical signals, via a magnet, to audible sound waves. A load cell is simply a type of transducer that converts a force into an electrical signal. Typically a force is applied to a strain gauge which becomes increasingly deformed under pressure. The deformation of the gauge is measured with a very low electrical signal output and this can be amplified into something usable.
According to the scientific journal, Nature, two geo-physicists that specialise in oceanography have been working on a device that produces almost unimaginable pressures, usually only found in the deep sea. Constructed from a converted lathe, the machine subjects rock, found in the sea at the edges of tectonic plates, to the sort of pressures usually associated with entire continents shifting. The idea is that they will learn how to predict earthquakes by understanding how the rock reacts to the pressure and temperature it is exposed to by their device. And at the heart of the mechanism are two load cells that calculate the torque being used. Given the nature of the research, highly accurate and dependable load cells were needed.
Elsewhere, European food manufacturers have been taking a keen interest in a newly developed inspection system that checks the weight of products. Designed to cope with a wide range of packages, up to 60 kilos, the system is said to be able to cope with an inspection rate of up to 80 products a minute. Load cell technology, again, is central to the system. Extreme accuracy is a requirement of the application, but so too is reliability because a faulty component could cause disastrous delays in production.
There are a good number of manufacturers of this sort of technology with a range of standard products, designed to address differing applications. Off the peg products may well suit a novel function and there is no reason that a pre-existing device will not do a very good job. However, not all manufacturers are able to construct a load measuring cell that is bespoke. Highly specialised devices are often needed by the motor sport industry, aeronautics and in mining. In these industries, finding a partner manufacturer with a track record of working co-operatively to produce the right sort of cell is increasingly vital.
