Many people who apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are unsure if the income provided from this source alone will be sufficient to support their basic living needs. Eligible applicants for SSI are those with limited income that meet the required standards of medical disability, or who are blind, or age 65 or older. In these cases qualifying applicants often also need assistance with regard to funding for necessary medical care, but many are unsure as to whether this falls under the category of support provided by the SSI program.
In most states, beneficiaries of Supplemental Security Income can also receive assistance for medical expenses through Medicaid. This type of assistance covers certain prescriptions, hospital stays, doctor appointments, and other related health care costs.
Medicaid for SSI beneficiaries is determined by Social Security in a majority of states; however some states also require applicants to file a separate application with a Medicaid agency. Of those who do, eligibility may either be determined by the agency’s own eligibility rules, or SSI rules, depending on the state of residence of the applicant.
In addition to medical assistance, individuals receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are in many cases eligible for other benefits that may support their basic living needs. These benefits may include assistance for housing and food. A Social Security Disability advocate can offer support to help individuals understand their state’s requirements with regard to Medicaid eligibility as well as other assistance available to them.
