Dallas, TX – Unbelievably, the last day Texans enjoyed a day without a fatality on a Texas roadway was more than 12 years ago, on November 7, 2000. Since that date, 41,252 people have lost their lives on Texas highways and roads. The Texas Department of Transportation recently issued a press release regarding this topic. The agency also pleaded for Texans to step up their safety measures.
The Texas Department of Transportation has begun a new effort to educate drivers about the dangers of driving without a seatbelt, drunk driving, and distracted driving. It now displays the number of fatalities this year on dynamic message signs along Texas highways. Each month, this number is updated. More than 2,500 people have died in Texas traffic accidents in the year 2012 alone.
The agency also continues to educate drivers through various seasonal campaigns that focus on simple steps for safe driving. These steps include:
-Put your cell phone away.
-Use the left lane for passing only.
-Never drink and drive.
-Obey all traffic laws.
In 2011, Texas experienced 3,048 traffic fatalities. Most fatalities resulted because people did not use seat belts, were drinking and driving, or driving distracted.
