Dallas Accident Lawyer: Texas DOT Says Roads Are Safer

02/19/2013 // 1-800-Car-Wreck // Amy Witherite // (press release)

The Texas Department of Transportation recently announced that Texas roads have been made safer through various safety projects in the state. An analysis of 669 Texas Department of Transportation road projects shows that the median barriers, left turn lanes, and wider roads and overpasses constructed as part of a new bond program have actually made Texas highways safer. With these improvements and upgrades, fewer fatalities and injuries have occurred.

The Texas DOT recently joined with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute to analyze and review crash data on specific projects. The researchers examined the number of accidents before and after safety measures were implemented. The study focused on 281 road widening projects, 111 median barrier projects, 184 left turn lanes, and other projects that were built as part of Texas DOT’s Safety Bond Program. TTI estimated that, over the life of these projects, they save more than 180 lives and prevent close to 700 incapacitating injuries each year.

These safety projects were undertaken after voters gave the Texas Transportation Commission the authority to issue $3 billion in bonds in 2003 to pay for state highway improvements. The Texas Legislature later increased the bonding authority to $6 billion. So far, for every dollar spent on an initiative in this program, a $20 return on investment has resulted.

Amy Witherite, a Dallas accident lawyer, commends the state for making our roads safer. To speak to Ms. Witherite or to another Dallas, Texas personal injury attorney, contact Eberstein & Witherite, LLP at 214.378.6665.
