Amy Witherite is a Dallas personal injury attorney who helps motorcycle accident victims recover compensation for their injuries. She draws readers’ attention to a new public education campaign designed to make Texas drivers more aware of motorcycle riders.
The Texas Department of Transportation recently launched a public education campaign about motorcycle safety. The campaign’s theme is: Look twice for motorcycles. Seeing them is saving them. This theme was selected because so many motorcycle crashes are caused by drivers who simply failed to notice the motorcyclist. For example, about half of the fatal motorcycle crashes in Texas occur at intersections. In many cases, a motorist turns left in front of an oncoming motorcyclist and reports never seeing the motorcyclist before turning.
A motorcycle offers the rider virtually no protection in a crash. That’s why 87 percent of motorcycle crashes injure or kill the rider. National studies show that a motorcyclist is five times more likely to be injured and 25 times more likely to die in a crash than a motorist.
More motorcycle statistics:
-Motorcycle fatalities represent 16 percent of all motor vehicle deaths in Texas for 2011.
-Close to 500 motorcyclists died in Texas in 2011.
-Over 5,000 motorcyclists were seriously injured in Texas in 2011.
-Deaths occur across the state. Forty-six percent of motorcyclists who died in 2011 died in rural areas and 54 percent died in urban areas.
-Forty-six percent of motorcyclists killed in 2011 were not wearing helmets.
