Since the “back-to-school” time coincides with the “back-to-traffic” time, the Texas Department of Transportation reminds drivers to “Drive Friendly. Drive Safe.” This campaign targets vehicle-pedestrian and vehicle-bicyclist collisions.
The statistics are grim. Last year, Texas vehicles struck more than 5,000 pedestrians. This resulted in close to 3,000 serious injuries and 481 fatalities. Texas vehicles also struck more than 2,000 bicyclists. This resulted in 1,450 serious injuries and 56 fatalities. Unfortunately, these numbers represent an increase of 13.2 percent in pedestrian fatalities and an increase of 19.1 percent in bicyclist fatalities.
To help yourself “Drive Friendly. Drive Safe.” remember the following tips from the Texas Department of Transportation:
~Pay attention. Do not use your cell phone while you drive.
~Obey speed limits.
~Look out for bicyclists.
~When passing a bicyclist, move to another lane, if possible, and offer plenty of room.
~Watch for bicyclists who may need to maneuver around potholes and debris.
~Look for pedestrians, especially when approaching crosswalks, intersections, and buses.
~Watch for children who may dart across the street to catch a school bus.
~Stop for school buses with flashing red lights.
Drivers who fail to follow traffic laws not only risk fines and jail time, but they also risk injuring or killing themselves and others.
