Toyota Prius Is Still a Mainstay on KBB.com’s 10 Best Green Cars List

04/30/2014 (press release: CambridgePRGroup) // WATERVILLE, Maine // Central Maine Toyota

Despite sustained advancements in EV technology and alternative-fuel powertrains across the auto industry, the now-iconic Toyota Prius hybrid continues to be a mainstay on the 10 Best Green Cars list from Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com. Landing at No. 3 on the list this year, the 2014 Prius is the highest-ranked traditional hybrid among the 10 Best Green Cars of 2014, with KBB.com editors not only praising the original Prius but also its extended family, which now includes the Prius c, Prius v and Prius Plug-in.

Each year, KBB.com’s 10 Best Green Cars list honors the standouts among the industry’s most fuel-efficient vehicles, covering a range of price points and drivetrains. The Toyota Prius family offers a variety when it comes to both pricing and powertrains, with the compact Prius c starting at less than $20,000 while returning up to 53 mpg in the city, and the Prius Plug-in netting up to 95 MPGe combined in EV Mode with its advanced plug-in hybrid system. Meanwhile, the Prius v brings added versatility into the equation, offering 34.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats while still achieving up to 44 mpg in the city.

“Other hybrid models have come and gone during the 14 years that the Prius has been on the U.S. market, but Toyota’s offering remains the best-selling gas-electric vehicle because its drivetrain technology is constantly being refined,” said Jeff Leclerc, general sales manager of Central Maine Toyota, a dealer of new and used cars in Maine. “Not only that, but Toyota recently diversified the Prius lineup so that it meets the needs of a wider variety of buyers, from the young urban dweller to the growing suburban family.”

In addition to evaluating a vehicle’s fuel efficiency, KBB.com also considered manufacturing methods and recyclability when determining its 10 Best Green Cars of 2014, and Toyota continues to excel in sustainable production as well. The company recently received its 10th straight ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award, the longest streak of any automaker. Presented by the EPA, the accolade recognizes Toyota’s environmental friendliness through superior energy efficiency, as the Japanese automaker has reduced overall energy use at its North American plants by 22 percent per vehicle produced during the past decade.
