Toyota has long produced off-road-focused versions of the Tundra, Tacoma and 4Runner, but this fall the automaker will sell all of its most capable 2015 models as part of the new TRD Pro Series, giving adventurous drivers a suite of go-anywhere performance features. With TRD standing for Toyota Racing Development, a team of experts has used the lessons learned from Toyota’s victories in the Baja 500 and 1000 endurance races to develop the factory-installed off-road packages for four-wheel-drive versions of the 2015 Toyota Tundra, Tacoma and 4Runner.
Regardless of the vehicle that buyers choose, each 2015 TRD Pro Series model will feature TRD Bilstein shocks with remote reservoirs that add one to two inches of travel depending on the model and boost dampening capabilities with their larger 60-millimeter pistons. Meanwhile, TRD-tuned front springs will provide 1.5 to two inches of additional ground clearance, and a TRD front skid plate will protect the engine bay if the vehicle grazes an obstacle. Outside, the new TRD Pro Series will be set apart by “TOYOTA” badging on the front grilles that nods to the brand’s popular early models, while TRD floor mats and shift knobs will greet drivers inside the cabins.
“The off-road-enthusiast community already knows that Toyota can hang with any brand off the beaten path, but the introduction of consistent TRD Pro badging across the automaker’s body-on-frame lineup will broaden that awareness while also upping the ante when it comes to capability,” said Wade Sterry, general manager of Russel Toyota, a Baltimore Toyota dealer. “Whether buyers choose the powerful Tundra, the nimbler Tacoma or the versatile 4Runner, they will not be disappointed in the style or substance of the TRD Pro Series.”
All TRD Pro Series models will sport larger black alloy wheels, growing to 18 inches on the Tundra TRD Pro with Michelin ORP tires, 16 inches on the Tacoma TRD Pro with BFGoodrich All-Terrain LT265/75R16 tires and 17 inches in a beadlock style on the 4Runner TRD Pro. Further enhancements to the pickup trucks will include a decreased spring rate for a smoother ride over bumpy terrain and unique TRD exhaust systems, with the Tundra TRD Pro receiving a dual exhaust and the Tacoma TRD Pro outfitted with a cat-back exhaust.
