Last month, Ford showed that it may still have plenty of fuel left to continue its sales momentum from the past few years, attracting its best May retail figures in 10 years. Boosted by all-time monthly sales records from the Ford Fusion midsize sedan and Ford Escape compact crossover SUV, the automaker moved more than 254,000 units overall in May for a 3 percent increase compared to the same month last year.
The Fusion sold a record 33,881 vehicles last month, a 15 percent rise year-over-year, while the Escape totaled 31,896 units in sales for a 10 percent jump over May 2013. Another top performer for the automaker was the Ford Explorer midsize SUV, which saw its sales increase by 21 percent to reach its best monthly tally since 2005.
“As long as Ford continues to develop a lineup that pushes the boundaries of fuel efficiency without sacrificing the fun of driving along the way, it should see even more sales growth in the coming months and years,” said Tucker Cianchette, general manager of Casco Bay Ford, a Maine Ford dealer in Yarmouth. “The Ford Fusion, Escape and Explorer all share the appeal of optional EcoBoost engine technology, which provides high levels of both efficiency and responsiveness.”
Available with a choice of two EcoBoost powerplants, the 2014 Ford Fusion returns up to 37 mpg on the highway with a 181-horsepower 1.5-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, while performance-focused buyers can opt for a 240-horsepower 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder that still nets up to 31 mpg on the highway. The same 2.0-liter engine achieves up to 30 mpg on the highway in the 2014 Ford Escape, while a 178-horsepower 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder gets 32 mpg on the highway in the compact crossover. For towing large boats to the harbor this summer, the 2015 Ford Explorer is available with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that churns out 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, while the aforementioned 2.0-liter EcoBoost is rated at 28 mpg on the highway in the SUV.
