Combining the flowing silhouette of a coupe with the muscular stance of a utility vehicle, the BMW X6 entered a class of its own when it debuted for the 2008 model year. Now that luxury competitors are finally attempting to emulate the success of the first Sports Activity Coupe, BMW is looking to put the game out of reach with the introduction of a second-generation X6 that will offer improved performance and even bolder styling when it goes on sale late this year.
Introduced earlier this month, the 2015 BMW X6 boasts an updated 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 engine in the X6 xDrive50i that churns out 445 horsepower, an increase of 45 horsepower compared to its predecessor. Meanwhile, buyers will be able to opt for a rear-wheel-drive X6 for the first time with the X6 sDrive35i, which will share the carry-over 300-horsepower 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder with the all-wheel-drive X6 xDrive35i. Every 2015 BMW X6 will provide quicker acceleration, thanks in part to a weight loss of about 35 to 55 pounds depending on the model. The Sports Activity Coupe incorporates lightweight materials like aluminum in its hood, magnesium in its instrumental-panel support and ultra-high-tensile steels in its body structure to achieve that weight reduction.
“The unique style of the BMW X6 has resonated with buyers because it conveys a sense of dominance that can’t be matched by a sports sedan and a sense of agility that you don’t get with a regular crossover SUV, and drivers feel all of that when they get behind the wheel,” said Melanie Sterry, general manager of BMW of Catonsville, a Baltimore BMW dealer. “Thanks to its effective performance and design upgrades, the next-generation X6 will give its owners an even more seamless blend of strength and sophistication.”
With the additions of Air Curtains on its front apron, Air Breathers on its fenders and air deflectors on its front wheel arches, the 2015 BMX X6 is more aerodynamic for improved efficiency, while new twin-circular Xenon headlights underlined by swooping chrome inserts now extend to meet the brand’s kidney grille. In the rear, the 2015 X6 has received new three-dimensional LED light strips that alter the look of the tail lamps and a new matte-silver underbody protector on its lower bumper.
