While many flooring brands now sell environmentally friendly products, it is one thing to sell a partially recycled carpet in a showroom, but quite another for a company to embrace an eco-conscious philosophy throughout its operations. Boosted by its scalable sustainability, Mohawk Industries has been listed higher than any other flooring manufacturer in the 2014 Newsweek Green Rankings.
Coming in at No. 241 out of the 500 companies ranked by Newsweek, Mohawk flooring adheres to a “no waste culture.” Seventeen of its North American facilities do not send any process waste to landfills, and that number is expected to expand to 28 by the end of this year. Meanwhile, six of Mohawk’s 10 North American ceramic-tile manufacturing plants recycle 100 percent of their process waste water. Across its facilities, the company has strived to improve energy efficiency and tap cleaner fuels to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Newsweek used a new research partner for 2014 after a one-year hiatus from its Green Rankings, enlisting Corporate Knights Capital for a closer comparison of companies from disparate industries, such as the manufacturing and financial sectors.
“We’re proud to carry a flooring brand like Mohawk that puts so much thought into not only the environmental friendliness of its products, but also the sustainability of the processes involved in making those products,” said Barry Greenberg, retail sales manager at A.J. Rose Carpets & Flooring, a Greater Boston flooring store. “At the same time, our customers receive carpets that are highly stylish, extremely comfortable and built to last. Buyers can get behind that no matter how eco-conscious they might be.”
Mohawk offers an EverStrand family of PET carpet fibers that require zero virgin petrochemical resources and even incorporate the byproducts from their own production. Reclaiming more than 3 billion plastic bottles each year, the company recycles them into PET chips before they are extruded into EverStand fiber. Despite their eco-friendly characteristics, EverStrand carpets are soft, come in a variety of fade-resistant colors and provide excellent durability, including a lifetime stain-resistance warranty.
