While most auto brands are lucky to have one or two vehicles recognized in value-focused awards, six of Toyota’s models were honored in the recently announced Edmunds.com 2014 Best Retained Value Awards, the most of any vehicle lineup. With the brand’s winners ranging from a sedan to crossover SUVs and pickup trucks, Toyota buyers have many options if they want a vehicle that is expected to have the highest residual value in its segment five years from now.
The 2014 Toyota Avalon emerged victorious in the Large Sedan segment of this year’s Best Retained Value Awards, while the 2014 Toyota Venza rose to the top of the Midsize/Large Wagon category. Among Toyota’s more rugged offerings, the 2014 Tacoma and Tundra led the Compact and Large Truck segments, respectively, while the 2014 FJ Cruiser and Sequoia bested their competition in the Midsize and Large SUV categories. Depending on model launch timing, Edmunds.com factored in three to five months of each vehicle’s average cash True Market Value to determine the awards, as well as its average predicted five-year depreciation during the first 12 months after launch.
“It’s a pretty safe bet that if you’re buying a Toyota, you’re going to get more money back at trade-in than you would with the vast majority of competing vehicles,” said Dewayne Fairchild, general manager of Price Toyota, a Delaware Toyota dealership. “What was most impressive in this year’s Edmunds.com awards was Toyota’s dominance in the truck and SUV segments. For example, the runners-up to the FJ Cruiser in the Midsize SUV segment were actually the Toyota Highlander and 4Runner.”
This fall, Toyota will be shoring up the go-anywhere reputation of its body-on-frame truck and SUV models with the launch of a new TRD Pro Series for four-wheel-drive versions of the 2015 Tundra, Tacoma and 4Runner. Across all models, the TRD Pro Series off-road packages will feature TRD Bilstein shocks with remote reservoirs, TRD-tuned front springs and a TRD front skid plate. Meanwhile, style upgrades will include TRD floor mats and shift knobs, black wheels, a newly available Inferno paintjob and an exclusive front grille with “TOYOTA” badging that pulls from the brand’s popular early models.
