07/07/2014 (press release: kurtshafer) // Temecula, CA, USA // Kurt Shafer
Kurt Shafer here, with news that all homeowners must read if their homes are older and might contain attic insulation that is commonly known as Vermiculite. Much has been written about vermiculite and asbestos by the FDA and by others concerned with it.
As an example, Marko Vovk, a home inspector in Cleveland, has posted a lot of data on vermiculite. The information below is from his web site.
Vermiculite insulation was manufactured in Dearborn, Elsie, River Rouge, Milan, Warren, Reed City, and Grand Rapids until the 1990?s. Today this material is reportedly found in the attics of about 35 million homes. Much of this Vermiculite originated at the W.R. Grace & Co. mine in Libby, Montana (photo). This mine was contaminated with tremolite asbestos. The tremolite asbestos was mixed in with the Vermiculite oar (sic) and shipped all over the country At one time, it provided 80 percent of the world’s vermiculite.)
(my note- that should be vermiculite ore, I think)
So I am posting this press release to call attention to this issue if you have an older home and want to install a whole house fan. As you know, whole house fans have a specific task – unlike any other fan – to draw warm air up into the attic and cooler outside air in windows. When the air is drawn into the attic there is a small increase in pressure that MIGHT cause asbestos dust to be blown through small gaps around ceiling light fixtures and forced air duct outlets down into your living space.
Before purchasing any whole house fan from any source, first look at your attic insulation. If it looks anything like the pictures on Mr. Vovk’s web site, be sure to have the material tested for asbestos. If it is contaminated contact an asbestos mitigation company in your area.
If you do not have vermiculite, be sure to look at Invisco’s whole house fans and note that you can find any performance point you want at a very competitive price AND you can get a 15 year warranty and SmartSpeed(tm) automatic speed control.
